I love reading
novels. My favourite writer is Mario Benedetti. He is another of the great writers from Uruguay, as Galeano
or Onetti. Benedetti was a journalist, novel and poet. Even wrote dramas of theater.
I like him because his writing is not pretentious; is very simple and equally transmits
emotions. The most famous novel is “The truce”, publisher in 1960, nine years
later translated into English. When I read it, I cried so much.
“The
truce” is a love history between retired man and a young secretary. The man is
Martin Santomé, who is forty nine years old, the woman is Laura Avellaneda, who
is not yet reached the thirty. He is a widower, and he is usually sad
and he lives with little energy, until he falls for Laura. They maintain a serious,
quiet and low profile relationship because Martin has three children. Also, he
thinks that Laura is embarrassed about their love, but is no true. Martin
always tells her “have so much life to live” but he doesn’t imagine the
truth. She is very ill and one day, suddenly, she died and Martin is single and
very sad again.
Benedetti
wrote a farewell of Laura in a poem entitled “Latter notion of Laura”.

I like the political work of Benedetti ! but not so much his love poems. Bye.
